A gear ratio that is too long may prevent you from taking full advantage of the engine's power, and one that is too short as well; normally, certain guidelines must be followed to choose them.

With a larger-tooth-count Front sprocket, you will have a higher top speed but lose pulling power; by reducing the tooth count of the Front sprocket, you will have more pulling power but less top speed.

In the case of the rear sprocket, it is completely different: if it has more teeth, it results in a shorter gear ratio (higher RPM), whereas if it has fewer teeth, it results in a longer ratio (higher top speed).
