A gear ratio that is too tall may prevent you from making full use of the engine's power, and one that is too short as well; normally, certain guidelines should be followed when choosing them.

If you choose a front sprocket with fewer teeth, you will achieve greater acceleration, but a lower top speed. If you choose a larger front sprocket, you will lose acceleration, but gain top speed.

In the case of the rear sprocket, it is completely different; if it has more teeth, it results in a shorter gear ratio (higher RPM); whereas if it has fewer teeth, it results in a taller ratio (higher top speed).
