In a 2-Stroke engine, the reed valve controls the intake of the mixture into the crankcase. If the reeds do not seat properly, are open, chipped, or fatigued, the engine loses intake vacuum and the symptoms become noticeable quickly: poorer low-end pull, misfiring when opening the throttle, mixture flowing back toward the carburettor, unstable idle, or lack of response at mid-range.
