Just like with Scooters, the gear ratios in geared mopeds are important to get the most out of the engine.
A gear ratio that is too long can result in not taking full advantage of the engine's power, and the same goes for one that is too short; usually, you need to follow some guidelines to choose them.

The most important thing to know is that the higher the number of teeth you have on the pinion, the longer the gear ratio, and the fewer teeth it has, the shorter the ratio.
In the case of the sprocket it is completely different: if it has more teeth, it means a shorter gear ratio, whereas if it has fewer teeth, it means a longer ratio.
