In a 2-Stroke engine, the crankshaft bearings and seals are much more important than they seem. The bearings keep the crankshaft centered and rotating with as little play as possible, while the seals are responsible for keeping the crankcase airtight so that the pressure and vacuum pulses can correctly move the mixture toward the cylinder.

When the bearings begin to develop play, metallic noises, vibrations, rough rotation, or crankshaft play may appear.

The seals are just as critical. A hardened or damaged seal can allow false air to enter the crankcase, causing the engine to run lean, hang at high revs, become difficult to tune, or change its behavior without any adjustment being made.

For this reason, when the engine is opened to replace the crankshaft, repair a failure, or carry out a complete rebuild, it is worth replacing the bearings and seals at the same time. Reassembling used components around a new crankshaft can compromise all the work carried out.
