A ratio that is too long may prevent you from taking full advantage of the engine's power, and one that is too short can have the same effect; usually, you need to follow some guidelines to choose them. The most important thing to know is that the more teeth the pinion has, the longer the ratio, and the fewer teeth it has, the shorter the ratio. In the case of the sprocket, it is completely different: if it has more teeth, it results in a shorter ratio, whereas if it has fewer teeth, it lengthens the ratio.
