The gear ratios in geared mopeds are extremely important to get the most out of the engine. A gear ratio that is too long may prevent you from taking full advantage of the engine's power, and one that is too short can have the same effect; usually, you need to follow certain guidelines to choose them.
In the case of the sprocket, it is completely different: if it has more teeth, it results in a shorter gear ratio (higher RPM), whereas if it has fewer teeth, it lengthens the ratio (higher top speed).
