The gear ratios in geared mopeds are extremely important to get the most out of the engine.
A ratio that is too long may mean you do not make full use of the engine's power, and with one that is too short, the same can happen. Normally, you should follow some guidelines to choose them.

If you choose a sprocket with fewer teeth, you will get more acceleration, but less top speed. If you choose a larger sprocket, you will lose acceleration but gain top speed.

In the case of the rear sprocket it is completely different: if it has more teeth it means a shorter ratio (higher RPM), whereas if it has fewer teeth it means a longer ratio (more top speed).
