K&N was founded in California, in 1960, by Ken Johson and Norm McDonal. Ken and Norm (K&N) were motorcycle and spare parts dealers, and supported a K&N factory racing team. This racing experience identified the need for better performing air filters. In 1969, K&N invented the reusable high-flow cotton air filter. K&N air filters demonstrated excellent performance and durability, and manufacturing these air filters soon became the company's main focus. The company has grown steadily and expanded its product lines. At the end of the 1980s, K&N invented the concept of a bolt-on performance air intake kit to replace the factory air box and air filter. K&N has also launched a line of innovative Wrench-Off oil filters. K&N has continued to develop and improve these products and produces air filters and related products for cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, quads, UTVs, snowmobiles, boats, heavy trucks, and other applications.

In competition, K&N has maintained a very active participation in racing and motorsports throughout its history, and has supplied championship-winning equipment in most forms of motorsport. This heritage and involvement in racing helps to develop better products for all types of vehicles and engines.
